Where a product runs open-source firmware (like SeedSigner), Behind the Curtain sources and assembles the hardware — we don't write or control the firmware. You should always verify the firmware yourself against the upstream project's signed releases before trusting a device with real funds.

Kit vs. Build It Yourself

Everything sold here uses parts and designs you could source and assemble yourself, usually for less money. Here's the actual trade-off, no spin.

Buy the Kit

  • Parts already sourced, tested, and known to fit together
  • Saves the time of comparing suppliers and screen/board revisions
  • Good starting point if this is your first air-gapped device
  • You still flash and verify the firmware yourself — no shortcuts there

Build It Yourself

  • Usually cheaper if you already have some of the parts
  • Zero trust in any third party's sourcing or soldering
  • Full upstream build guides exist — see verify.html for links
  • Better if you want to understand every component, not just the firmware
